FAQ

Has anything unexplainable happened to you?
I was seven years old when my parents took the family to Communist Russia during the 1970s. We lived there for six months while my father did mathematical research. Upon arrival at the airport, the suspicious Russian guards began thoroughly searching our seven suitcases, convinced that we were spies. Americans simply didn't go to Russia in the 70s! We of course we're not spies. However, my parents had packed one of the suitcases full of Bibles. It was highly illegal in Russia at that time and my parents could have received a very long prison sentence. But they wanted to get Bibles to the people of Russia, as they were not allowed to purchase them in their country. After searching the six suitcase without Bibles, they approached the seventh. I think my dad even told us that one guard’s hand was literally on the zipper of the suitcase with all the Bibles. Unexpectedly, one of the guards said something like "There is nothing but clothes in these suitcases. Let the Americans go. Besides, their poorly-behaved children are being too loud and rambunctious!” My father was fluent in Russian and translated for us.The shocking thing was that my brother, only five at the time, and I had been quietly standing there the entire time. We were exhausted from nearly 24 hours of flying, so we were hardly being loud. We hadn't said a word. There were no children around us either. Whatever the guards thought they heard or saw, it certainly wasn't reality and it saved my parents from decades in a Russian prison. I'm extremely skeptical about most things, but this incident has always reminded me that God is absolutely real!Months later, my father was hours away from handing over some of these Bibles to a Russian pastor at an underground secret church. But he suddenly felt like he shouldn't meet this man after all. The pastor turned out to be an undercover KGB agent, only discovered three years later as explained in a letter by a member of the church who befriended us. Yet again, protection from God. That will stick with me forever.
What is the best autobiography written by an astronaut?
Well, I'm certainly hoping the answer will be "mine!"  While not an autobiography, my upcoming memoir --scheduled for release June 1, 2015--  might be able to "fill the bill."  Tentatively titled "The Ordinary Spaceman: From Boyhood Dreams to Astronaut," the stories contained within should be fun and thought-provoking, written in the same style as my answers here on Quora.  So... if you like what you read from me here, I am hopeful (and confident) that you will also like what you read in my book.  At the very least, I ask that you give me some consideration. While my story is probably not destined to become a situational comedy (sitcom) pilot on ABC TV, parts of my story are chronicled already in an extremely well-done documentary by the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET).  Check out the website here: Homemade Astronaut: The Clay Anderson Story - Full ProgramThere... how's that for a shameless plug?!And, by the way, keep lookin' up!

How do I fill my schedule without burning myself out?
Have certain weekly events scheduled on certain days. Wednesdays, I have a meeting with my support group at church. Every other Monday, I go out to dinner with my dad. Thursdays I go visit my dad. Have certain days free in case something comes up, but scheduling events on specific days that repeat- or even having certain days be activity days- is definitely an excellent method.

How do I file taxes and how would I file them into my FAFSA?
First, if you don’t have any income now you don’t need to file taxes. Don’t worry about next year at this time.If you applying for financial aid then you fill out a FAFSA. If you will be attending college in the Fall you are overdue to file FAFSA. You will want to do that now.For FAFSA, first you and one parent should each get a FSA (Federal Studetn Aid) ID and save your login and password as you will need it each year:https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htmAfter a couple of days you will be able to fill out FAFSA. The student and the parent each fills out their section. If you have no income your section is easy. For the parent section, the parent will use 2022 taxes to fill it out. Here are all the steps to filling it out, including getting the FSA ID.Filling Out the FAFSAFor the 2017–18 school year, you will again use 2022 income figures. This is a one time repition. For 2018–19 use 2022 income. For 2019–20 use 2022 income.Starting this year, the new schedule is that FAFSA will open in October. So sometimes after October, and before you college’s deadline (often Jan to Mar), fill out the FAFSA again. Not much will change this time, because as a one time thing, you will again use your own ,zero• 2022 income and your parent will use family 2022 income. The only thing that will change is your assets. You report bank accounts and investments as of the day you file. Now if you get a job, you will likely file a 1040EZ form. Very simple. You will get the income statement from your employer by Jan 30 of each year. You should file by April. If you get awarded federal work-study and earn that way, you report that on the FAFSA so you don’t get it counted against you. Regular income may be counted toward your EFC but you have to earn more than 6 thousand a year for it to affect aid. Money in your bank account does affect your aid. Student savings is assessed at 20% but parent savings is assessed at only 6%.I want to add something important. If you taxes are already filed, you can import the data from your tax forms into the FAFSA using the DRT (Data Retrieval Tool). Schools like to see this done as they them know the data matches your taxes. So if you have to enter preliminary, non-final taxes to meet a deadline, do the DRT after you file your taxes. It is usually available for use after a few weeks.Filling Out the FAFSA
